Local energy agreement in EU should be formed: EP president
2011-06-08 21:09:01

Central European countries should form an energy agreement in order to conduct coordinated actions in the area of the energy industry, President of the European Parliament (EP) Jerzy Buzek Tuesday told the European Economic Congress in Katowice, southern Poland.

Formation of energy partnership in central and eastern Europe is a promising initiative, according to another congress participant, former EU Commissioner Guenther Verheugen.

Buzek said EU countries should create a common energy market, conduct scientific research and coordinate measures in energy trade.

The first stage of the energy agreement formation should embrace the countries of central and eastern Europe, as having a " little different needs," which then should unite with the rest of Europe, Buzek said, quoted by the PAP news agency.

It is obvious that the countries of central and eastern Europe have a common interest and that they lack a joint strategy, Verheugen said.

Verheughen noted that the voice of the countries of central and eastern Europe is not loud enough, in particular with regard to energy policy.

The proposal of the partnership of central Europe in the energy sector embraces 10 countries: Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
